CHAPTER TEN

“Bradwyn is going to be alright.” Reva explained to Gallyn as she returned.

They sat in the darkness of night, the moon over its halfway point. Gallyn felt himself drained, despite not having exhausted himself physically during the recovery of the child.

Reva had taken the boy to some of her associates, where she assured Gallyn he would be safe.

But still, he worried. Living within the city, he would not be able to see the boy again, but apparently Reva had connections to people who took Bait and kept them safe.

It would have to do, for now.

“Nice name, Bradwyn. Come from anyone you know?” Reva asked. Gallyn felt her trying to dig up his past once again, but he lacked the energy to fight against her.

For now, he didn’t need his walls.

“No. I just wanted a name that followed the same convention as mine, and my adoptive father. Poor kid didn’t have a name.”

“Does that mean you didn’t either?”

Gallyn shook his head. “Not until I was nearly ten. For a while, I thought my name was Bait, but then I learned what it meant.”

Gallyn had his eyes closed as he recalled on his childhood. Despite his lack of vision, it was obvious that Reva was staring at him, brimming with curiosity.

“He’ll be alright, you know.”

Gallyn opened his eyes, only to see the dark silhouette of Reva, unable to make her features as his eyes readjusted to the darkness. “What?”

“Bradwyn. He’ll be fine. You don’t need to worry about him.” Reva assured him. She was smiling, that much could be told through her words.

“I know. I’m not worried about that.” He smiled back, closing his eyes once more.

“Then what is it?”

Gallyn remained quiet, taking in a few breaths of temporary peace. The wind blew gently, as if sensing his moment’s serenity.

“I just find it curious.”

“Find what curious?”

“It’s a normal night of spending my time outside, in an alley, as usual, but...I don’t feel cold for some reason. I feel…tranquil?”

Reva chuckled. “You have a lot of trouble trying to decide what mood you’re in, you know?”

“It happens when I spent the first ten or so years stifling them so I could survive. Speaking of cold, that was you back at the bakery, wasn’t it?”

“What?”

“You actually lowered your own temperature, didn’t you?” Gallyn asked.

“I had to do it, they were about to go inside, and you were still in there.” Reva defended herself.

“No, no, I’m not accusing you of doing anything stupid,” Gallyn defended. “It was actually a smart move, I’m impressed. What did he mean when he mentioned that you were ‘flat’?”

“Oh, well, thank you first of all. I resorted to two common forms of manipulation when you’re invoking your Power on someone else. The first is lowering the body temperature, and the second is slowing the muscles down, or…softening them, I guess. It’s difficult to explain, but because this Power flows inside of us, it affects our entire being. I basically tried to ‘squeeze’ the Power out of my muscles, so it lacks the normal flow.
